Steve Dawson
Mark Caro

Steve Dawson is the brilliant singer/songwriter/frontman of the band Dolly Varden as well as a musician’s musician who has played and sung just about everywhere with just about everyone. Mark Caro is a longtime entertainment/cultural reporter who worked his way from reviewing New Kids on the Block and Milli Vanilli to covering Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Europe for the Chicago Tribune, with a book called The Foie Gras Wars (Simon & Schuster) in between. When Mark took Steve’s inventive songwriting class at the Old Town School of Folk Music, he was so inspired that he jumped at Steve’s suggestion that they collaborate on a book that would combine Steve’s best songwriting exercises with a deep exploration of the joys and challenges of creating your own music.

Now Steve and Mark are celebrating the release of Take It to the Bridge: Unlocking the Great Songs Inside of You (GIA) with an afternoon of music and songwriting tales. The pair will discuss their own adventures in songwriting, dig into the work of their musical heroes (and villains — we’ll see whether Mark baits Steve about his Pink Floyd aversion) and try to illuminate the path for anyone seeking a more creative life.

And there will be music: Steve will perform songs that span his almost 30 years as a Chicago musician, and Mark will try to get up the courage to play a few examples of what he’s learned as a songwriter as well. Expect special guests to join them on stage.

Take It to the Bridge will be on sale for a discounted price to those who attend, and Steve and Mark will sign all books (but no body parts, sorry).
