Chicago Blues Fest Weekend Brings Blues Acts to SPACE

The 33rd annual Chicago Blues Festival kicks off this weekend in Grant Park, and to celebrate, SPACE welcomes some of our favorite blues acts to the stage.

It all begins tonight with Grammy-winning harmonica star Sugar Blue, as part of our Lagunitas Blue Mondays series. Not your typical bluesman, Sugar Blue’s acoustic showcase at SPACE will reveal an intimate and introspective side of this dynamic performer. Tickets are just $8 and will be available at the door.

This Thursday, June 9, SPACE’s resident bluesman Dave Specter kicks off the festival weekend with a special Delmark Records blues bash at the club. The concert will showcase the talents of Jimmy Johnson, Demetria Taylor, Omar Coleman and Corey Dennison, along with the house band of Specter, Brother John Kattke, Gerry Hundt and Kenny Smith. Read a recent interview with Delmark founder, Bob Koester, via Chicago Tribune.

This Friday, don’t miss Toronzo Cannon showcasing his latest record, The Chicago Way, for Alligator Records’ Blues Fest after party at 10pm. Chicago-born-and-raised Cannon is considered one of the city’s most innovative blues guitarists, vocalists and songwriters. The evening will also feature an opening acoustic set by Alligator’s Curtis Salgado.

Later this month, Paul Cebar brings his world music-influenced group to SPACE. Cebar’s allure stems from his gifted songwriting and the crew of musicians he calls Tomorrow Sound. Watch Cebar and Tomorrow Sound perform “Baby Shake” for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel here and get your tickets for their show at SPACE on June 25.

Chicago native Otis Taylor returns to SPACE on July 2 with his band, featuring violinist Anne Harris, plus a special opening set from Dave Herrero. Over the past decade, Taylor has received wide acclaim, with Guitar Player naming him “arguably the most relevant blues artist of our time.”

On July 10, SPACE will welcome American blues and rock supergroup Royal Southern Brotherhood. Led by Grammy-winning percussionist-vocalist Cyril Neville, the group will be supporting their latest record, The Royal Gospel, which will be released on June 24.

On July 25, John Primer will arrive for another installment of SPACE’s Blue Mondays series. Grammy and Blues Award nominee Primer once served as a guitarist, opening act and bandleader for the renowned Muddy Waters, and has found recent success as a solo act. Discover Primer’s powerful grooves here.

And on Aug. 5, SPACE will host New Orleans R&B guitarist Walter “Wolfman” Washington, whose performance promises to be an intricate and intimate entertainment experience, with his heartfelt vocals and soulful guitar styles. Watch Washington and his band, The Roadmasters, performing a hometown show at d.b.a. here.
