The Bad Plus, Stanley Clarke, Reckless Kelly, Joe Pug, Jim Lauderdale & More


SPACE is very excited to have critically acclaimed jazz trio The Bad Plus at the club for two shows in December. Jazz fans will have even more to be excited about that month, with legendary bassist Stanley Clarke returning with his band on Dec. 9.

Grammy-winning Texas country-rock group Reckless Kelly comes to SPACE in support of its ninth studio album,Sunset Motel, this November. Check out the single “How Can You Love Him (You Don’t Even Like Him)” via Rolling Stone. We’re excited to have folk singer Joe Pug back at SPACE for two shows in December. Pug, who spent some of his formative songwriting years in Chicago, was a major standout last December.

Nashville songwriter Jim Lauderdale, who has collaborated with a musical who’s who, including Ralph Stanley, Elvis Costello and Robert Hunter, returns to the club in December. Another well-respected Nashville songwriter, Kevin Gordon, who Rolling Stone calls a “juke-joint professor,” is here in November. Bluesman Duke Robillard is back at the club in December.

New York singer-songwriter Jaymay comes to the club in support of her new album, To Tell The Truth, in December. And Chicago duo Bittersweet Drive will celebrate the release of their new CD in November. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. via evanstonspace.com.

This Weekend: Tonight, SPACE is excited to welcome contemporary Mexican ensemble Villalobos Brothers, who blend Mexican folk music with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music. On Saturday, a cappella group Street Corner Symphony are here with Andy Davis. And there are only a few tickets left for Sunday’s concert with singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins.

Next Week at SPACE, we have a blockbuster string of shows. Storytellers come together for The Moth on Monday night. Tickets have sold out via The Moth’s website, but there may be some tickets released at the door. On Tuesday, one of our favorite soulful folk singers, Langhorne Slim, returns with his band for a standing room show at the club. British jazz phenom Jacob Collier is here next Wednesday. Jazz, soul and pop fans won’t want to miss his unreal “one-man live show.” And on Thursday, English R&B singer James Hunter — known for his collaborations with Van Morrison — brings his stellar six-piece band to the club. The group recently released a new album, Hold On!, via Daptone Records

On Sale Saturday: Richard Thompson, Iris DeMent, The Flat Five, Joe Pug, Andrew Belle & More


New shows go on sale Saturday at 11 a.m., including our big New Year’s Eve shows and a range of other December and holiday-themed shows. The box office at SPACE will be open Saturday from 11-12:30. Visit our Facebook page and comment on this post for a chance to win tickets.

Richard Thompson (Folk/Rock) ~ On December 29, 30 and 31, 93XRT welcomes British singer-songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson to SPACE for an incredibly special three-night, solo-acoustic New Year’s Eve run. Tickets go on sale for these shows on Saturday morning via our website and box office.

Iris DeMent w/ Pieta Brown (Country/Folk) ~ Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Iris DeMent will be at SPACE on Saturday, Dec. 12, with support from Pieta Brown. DeMent’s new album, The Trackless Woods, sets her original music to the words of 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova.

The Flat Five (Alt-Country) ~ December brings the group the Chicago Reader named “The Best Cover Band That Plays One Gig a Year” back to SPACE. The Chicago supergroup — comprised of Kelly Hogan and Nora O’Connor (The Decemberists); Scott Ligon and Casey McDonough (NRBQ); and Alex Hall (The Fat Babies) — has been busy at work on a new album of songs written by Chris Ligon.

Joe Pug (Americana/Folk) ~ On Saturday, Dec. 5, singer-songwriter Joe Pug, who got his musical start in Chicago before moving to Austin, makes his debut at the club. Pug’s third studio album, Windfall, was released earlier this year.

Andrew Belle Christmas Show (Pop/Singer-Songwriter) ~ Singer-songwriter Andrew Belle is back with a holiday-themed show on Friday, Dec. 18. The Chicago native will be fresh off a tour supporting Brett Dennen this fall.

Vanessa Carlton (Pop/Singer-Songwriter) ~ On Nov. 11, Vanessa Carlton will celebrate her new album, Liberman, at the club. The hit songwriter’s new tracks reflect her current state of mind, having recently married John McCauley (of Deer Tick), moved to Nashville and had a baby girl.
