Birds of Chicago, a local collective headed by JT Nero and Allison Russell, captured the attention of roots-music lovers with the release of their self-titled, debut album in October, 2012. After receiving rave reviews for their studio work, Birds of Chicago set out on the road for almost a year’s worth of constant touring that included a stop here at SPACE on June 27, 2013 to perform for their hometown crowd. This live album beautifully captures SPACE’s euphonious main room while showing off Nero and Russell, who sometimes perform as a duo, backed by their full band. Featuring members of Nero’s previous project, The Clouds, as well as Michelle McGrath, the complete collective offers an energetic party of poetry, soul, and roots music with a twist of rock ‘n’ roll. Live From SPACE by Birds of Chicago would fit nicely alongside The Alabama Shakes or Split Lip Rayfield in any music library, and is a sample of live Americana music at its finest.
