Peter Wolf Returns to SPACE in Support of ‘A Cure For Loneliness’

Legendary rock frontman Peter Wolf will return to SPACE on Nov. 14 with his band, The Midnight Travelers, in support of his recent album, A Cure For Loneliness. “It fuses Cajun accordion, country pedal steel, doo-wop harmonies, soul grit and rock toughness with the ease of an artist who has been conversing with those idioms for decades,” writes Greg Kot in Chicago Tribune. Madeleine Peyroux Brings Secular Hymns to SPACE on November 13

madpeyJazz vocalist Madeleine Peyroux returns to SPACE on Nov. 13 in support of her brand-new album, Secular Hymns, which was recorded live in a 12th-century English church and features songs by Allen Toussaint, Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt, among others. “Secular Hymns is very close to the feel of a Peyroux live show, and one in which she’s clearly having a ball,” writes The Guardian. This Week: Tonight, Tyrone Wells brings his “Cover to Cover” tour to the club. East Nashville songwriter and “Outlaw Country” radio host Elizabeth Cook is here Friday at 8:30 p.m. with songwriter Don Gallardo. 

This Weekend: Journalist Mark Caro teams up with songwriter Steve Dawson to discuss the creative process at our special matinee show on Saturday at 1 p.m. On Saturday night, Robbie Fulks brings together a crack band (Duke Levine, Nora O’Connor, Scott Ligon, Todd Phillips and Alex Hall) to perform songs from his recent album, Upland Stories , as well as music from his back catalog as well as new and unreleased songs. On Sunday, country-rock pioneer Jim Messina comes to SPACE for a special full-band concert.

Also this Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m., SPACE partners with Evanston Oktoberfest, presenting music from The Dave Specter Blues Band and The Western Elstons. The beer festival takes place at 1818 Maple Ave., and features local vendors like Temperance Beer Co., Sketchbook Brewing and more. 

Coming Up: Next Tuesday, Oct. 18, Maria Muldaur brings her New Orleans-flavored “Bluesiana” band to SPACE. Next Wednesday, Cuban jazz pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa performs with his trio in support of his new album, El Viaje. Minneapolis songwriter Mason Jennings returns to SPACE on Saturday, Oct. 22, in support of his most recent album, Wild Dark Metal. Louisiana bluesman Eric Lindell is here for a special solo show on Oct. 27. And Chicago native Eric D. Johnson (pictured) brings his revitalized Fruit Bats project to SPACE on Friday, Oct. 28.

This Week: Tonight, British soul group The James Hunter Six is here. On Friday, Megon McDonough and Eddie Holstein share an early show bill, while Minneapolis rockers Twilight Hours are here for the late show. Lau, “the most musically adventurous trio in British folk” (Guardian), make their SPACE debut for an early show on Saturday. Indie-pop band The Saint Johns are here for Saturday’s late show. Songwriters Anne Hills and Michael Smith return for a Sunday matinee. And critically acclaimed Nashville songwriter Rayland Baxter is here on Sunday night. A few reserved table seats have just been released.

Coming Up: Next Tuesday, Dave Specter welcomes Nicholas Tremulis as special guest in his Adventures in Guitar blues series. On Wednesday, avant-garde saxophonist Colin Stetson performs his experimental version of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony with his 12-piece ensemble. Cuban-American jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval returns next Thursday. Listen to a new single, “Walk A Mile In My Shoes,” recorded in the SPACE studios, in memory of our beloved friend, colleague and one of the greatest soul, blues and gospel singers ever, Otis Clay. The song features 21 musicians, many of whom worked with, knew and loved Clay. Suggested donation for a download is $5 via SPACE’s Bandcamp page, but fans can pay as little as $2, or as much as they want. Look for it on iTunes and Spotify soon. Proceeds will benefit the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.
